Davies 30


General Outline

The Davies 30 will be a LERAA/LERA postal shoot designed for SMLE, No4 and No5 rifles
chambered in .303 in “as issued” configuration. Other classes are permitted with the consent
of the executive by prior arrangement however may not be eligible to have their scores
recorded in the postal shoot. Targets used will be the Fig 11 and Fig 12 targets. The scoring will
be done by the scorer and participants with scores relayed to the score board after each detail.
As this is a postal shoot it can be shot a number of times throughout the year with scores sent
through to LERA to be recorded.
REPORTING/BRIEFING
All competitors are to report to the Club Hut at the Rankins Springs Target Shooting Complex
from 08.30 for Registration. A mandatory Range and Safety briefing will be held at 08.30 at the
flagpole.
IN ALL CASES THE WORD OF THE RANGE OFFICER IS FINAL
SQUADDING – Competitors will be squadded into 2 details on the firing line with a second per
shooter. Scoring details will be selected at random and dispatched when changeover is
required.
AMMUNITION – A minimum of 32 rounds are required to complete the event. Competitors are
to supply their own ammunition factory or reloads. No restrictions on the type of ammunition
used.
FIRING POSITIONS – Prone, sitting/kneeling and off-hand standing. Competitors with
disabilities or medical requirements will be able to shoot in the approved positions: sitting nonresting rather than standing; sitting/kneeling resting rather than prone; start in prone position
if unable to move quickly from standing alert to prone; sitting both elbows supported, rather
than prone.
RIFLES – All SMLE, no4 and no5 rifles shall be in the spirit of the original. The LERAA Classes and
Definitions will be applied at the discretion of the executive. The following will apply regardless
of the mark of SMLE, No4 or No5:
a. Sights must be set centrally; aim off for wind adjustment
b. Slings if used must be 2 point service pattern (leather or webbing) attached to the mid band
swivel and butt sling swivel
c. Shooting jackets, Padded Mats and Padded shooting gloves are not permitted

Practice 1

Distance: 200 yards
Position: standing unsupported
No. of Shots: 2 sighting shots (scored) & 10 to count
Targets: figure 11 (8” vertical band on 4ft screen)
Scoring: scored individually (5 inner, 4 outer, 2 screen)
Timing: in your own time

PROCEDURE

  1. Competitors will when ordered, fire 2 sighting shots from any
    position, each shot to be individually marked if range permits. Competitors will be
    ordered to adopt the alert position. Seconds to signal readiness to RO
  2. On the command ‘Watch and shoot’ competitors commence fire.
  3. Rifles to be checked and cleared by seconds.
  4. Scores will be collected at the end of the practice

Practice 2

Distance: 200 yards
Position: sitting/kneeling (one elbow supported)
No. of Shots: 10 to count
Targets: figure 12
Scoring: scored (5, 4) central vertical band
Timing: 10 x 3 second exposures

PROCEDURE

  1. Competitors will be ordered to the line and asked to adopt the sitting/kneeling position. Seconds
    to signal readiness to RO
  2. On the command ‘Watch and shoot’ competitors are to load. There will be 10 exposures of 3
    seconds each, with an away time of 5 seconds, over a 6ft frontage. One round to be fired at each
    exposure.
  3. Rifles to be checked and cleared by seconds.
  4. Scores will be collected at the end of the practice

Distance: 200 yards
Position: Alert position to prone
No. of Shots: 10 to count
Targets: figure 11 (8” vertical band on 4ft screen)
Scoring: scored (5 inner, 4 outer, 2 screen)
Timing: 60 second exposure

  1. Competitors will be ordered to the line and asked to adopt the alert position. Seconds to signal
    readiness to RO
  2. On the command ‘Watch out, watch out’ competitors are to load. On the indication of the
    whistle blast, competitions are to adopt the prone position and commence firing. frontage.
  3. Rifles to be checked and cleared by seconds.
  4. Scores will be collected at the end of the practice.
